Solid away victory on the 16th of May
A Johan Andersson double and an Espen Hoff in a scoring mood secures a solid away victory against Godset in Drammen
It has been a fruitful week for the Blue. 2 – 1 against Brann and 12 – 1 against Høland in the first round of the cup. And on the 16th of May a hardworking Stabæk secured yet another three pointer against a strong home team in Drammen.
Stabæk had only 16 men in the squad, and players like Diogo, Palmi, Pontus and Daniel were neither on the field nor on the bench. But Stabæk can muster yet another Swede and after five minutes Johan Andersson takes responsibility and, receiving a precise pass from Mix, sneaks his way behind Godsets defensive line and places the ball behind Godset keeper Adam Larsen Kwarsey. Minutes later captein Jon Inge Høiland alsomst adds a second goal – heading a Hedenstad free kick into the angle of the crossbars.
After a spirited Stabæk opening, Godset is allowed more time with the ball – and after 17 minutes Godset wins the football at midfield. The ball is passed towards the corner flag and a cross is made into the box. Gromstad fails to clear the ball out of the box, and Godset “wonderboy” Marcus Pedersen kicks the loose ball into the far side of the goal. After the equalizer the match opens up, and both teams create several half chances. The Blue back four are solid, and the midfield and strikers are fast on the attack. A quick one touch combination between Hoff and Gunnarsson almost makes it to an unmarked Mix at the edge of the five meter box, and Gunnarsson himself later almost converts on a free kick. And finally, a minute before half time, the Blue pressure pays off. Hoff and Hedenstad sets up a fine combination that ends in a cross in front of the goal that keeper Larsen is unable to stop. The ball ends up at the feet on an unmarked Andersson who marks his second goal for the day, and the Blues can enjoy their break with a well-deserved 2 – 1 lead.
Strømsgodset takes over more of the play in the second half, but a well organized back four and an awake Jon Knudsen closes the door on all attempts to score. It takes half an hour before Stabæk gets its first scoring opportunity of the second half. Henning Hauger retrieves a ball after a daring, but ultimately unsuccessful, Skjelvik raid towards goal. Henning serves the ball to Gunnarsson on the right side, who delivers a precise pass across the front of the goal that Hoff resolutely expedites into the roof of the net. The air goes out of the Strømsgodset balloon and Stabæk can fairly comfortably control the match the remaining fifteen minutes until the final whistle.
It was a most entertaining match in Drammen, where the home team had the most ball control, and did produce many chances. But a hardworking Stabæk team makes the most of the opportunities they get, and score three very nice goals. In addition to Andersson and Hoff, the young players put on an excellent performance. Mix put in yet another solid day at work, showing a very good eye for the play on the field. Hedenstad is again a force as left back, with important contributions both in defense and on attack. And in addition, Veigar Pall Gunnnarsson works hard throughout the match, notching up yet another assist to his otherwise marathon long assist list.
This victory places Stabæk ahead of Strømsgodset in hte league table, and the Blues can now look forward to the second round cup tie against Bærum on Wednesday at Sandvika Stadion, and towards the next league match, against Start at Ullevaal on Monday 24th May.
